Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has approved a decision to name a stand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai after Indian captain Rohit Sharma. The decision was approved by the state board on Tuesday, April 15, during their Annual General Meeting (AGM).
Notably, popular Indian cricketers Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Vijay Merchant, and Dilip Vengsarkar have stands named after them at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Now, Sharma is another Indian player to join the list.
Sharma, who is the current test and ODI skipper for India, also grabbed two incredible feats for the Indian Team since the start of 2024. Under his captaincy, the Indian team won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the Caribbean Islands. After the feat, the Indian team were felicitated at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai by BCCI. Earlier this year in February, Sharma led the Indian Team to ICC Champions Trophy title in UAE.
Wankhede Stadium to have a Rohit Sharma Stand
In their official statement, MCA has approved naming one of the stands at the Wankhede Stadium after Sharma’s name. The Divecha Pavilion Level 3 inside the stadium will be named as Rohit Sharma stand. Also, former BCCI secretary and Maharashtra politician Sharad Pawar and former Indian cricketer late Ajit Wadekar will have a stand after their names.
“Another key resolution passed during the AGM was the approval of the naming of stands at Wankhede Stadium – a proposal initially put forward by Mr Milind Narvekar and seconded by Mr Jitendra Awhad. The house unanimously approved the stand namings,” MCA said in a statement.
Below are the details for the renaming of stands at the Wankhede Stadium as approved by the MCA.
Grand Stand Level 3: Shri Sharad Pawar Stand
Grand Stand Level 4: Ajit Wadekar Stand
Divecha Pavilion Level 3: Rohit Sharma Stand
Notably, Indian ODI and test skipper Sharma has a close relationship with the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. He was brought up in Mumbai and played for the Mumbai team in the domestic cricket, before making his debut for India. Wankhede Stadium is also the home ground of Mumbai Indians franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Sharma led MI to five IPL titles as captain of the side.
The franchise failed to win the title in the first five seasons. However, Sharma led MI to titles in the 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020 seasons, making them the most successful team in the IPL then. Although Sharma is not the MI skipper anymore, he is still a crucial member of the side. He is also part of the side in IPL 2025.
