Lasith Malinga picked 170 wickets for MI in his playing career from IPL 2009 till 2019.

Lasith Malinga has rejoined the Mumbai Indians camp, this time as their bowling coach ahead of IPL 2024. Recently, MI parted ways with New Zealand’s Shane Bond, who had been their bowling coach for 9 years.

The Mumbai Indians legend, who played for the franchise for over a decade between 2009 and 2019, will join the Mark Boucher-led contingent for the 2024 season. The coaching staff also includes Malinga's ex-MI teammate, Kieron Pollard.

Malinga has been with the Mumbai Indians since 2009 and has won seven trophies with the team, including four IPL titles, two Champions League T20 wins, and one Major League Cricket trophy as a bowling coach. He previously worked as the Rajasthan Royals' fast bowling coach.

“It is truly an honor for me”- Lasith Malinga on returning to MI camp

Malinga is also the bowling coach for two other teams owned by the Mumbai Indians - MI Cape Town in the SA20 league, South Africa; and MI New York in Major League Cricket, USA. He also mentored the MI team in IPL 2018, when he took a break from playing.

“It is truly an honor for me to be appointed Bowling Coach of Mumbai Indians and my journey in the #OneFamily continues, following MI New York and MI Cape Town. I am looking forward to working closely with Mark, Polly, Rohit, and the rest of the team, especially the bowling unit, whose approach I loved last season, and the young MI talent that has the potential to excel, backed by the passionate MI Paltan,” Malinga was quoted by MI website.

Malinga had an excellent career for MI as a bowler from 2009-2019. He picked 170 wickets in 122 matches at an economy of 7.14 and best bowling of 5/13. He was once the highest wicket-taker in IPL history but was surpassed by Yuzvendra Chahal.
