Australia T20I skipper Mitchell Marsh has revealed the possible opening combination of his team for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Notably, after David Warner’s retirement from international cricket last year, Australia have tested many batsmen in the opening slot.
Marsh, Matthew Short, Glenn Maxwell, Jake Fraser-McGurk, and Travis Head have opened the innings for Australia in the shortest format over the last year. In the recent T20I series against the West Indies, Maxwell was tested as an opener with skipper Marsh in the absence of Head.
Australia are set to play a three-match T20I series against South Africa at home, with the opening game scheduled to take place on August 10 at Marrara Cricket Ground, Darwin. The South Africa tour of Australia 2025 will also observe a three-match ODI series.

Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head to be possible openers for Australia in T20 World Cup 2026
While speaking to reporters ahead of the T20I series against South Africa, Marsh revealed that he and Head will be the opening pair for Australia in T20Is in future.
“It’ll be myself and Heady [Travis Head] up the top for the foreseeable future. Obviously we’ve played a lot together, (we’ve) got a great relationship, so (we’ll) start there,” he said.
Notably, Marsh and Head have never opened together in T20Is; however, they have held an impressive record in ODIs. The duo has an average of over 50 while batting together in the 50-over format.
Notably, the Australian skipper failed to impress as an opener in the recent T20I series against the West Indies, hitting just 81 runs across five games at an average of 16.20. However, he was quite effective as an opener for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 earlier this year, scoring 627 runs in 13 games at an average of 48.23.
Meanwhile, the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 will be played in India and Sri Lanka in February-March next year. A total of 20 teams are going to be part of the tournament. Australia could not reach the semi-finals in the previous edition and also faced a shocking defeat against Afghanistan.
