Afghanistan have been labeled as dark horses of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Drawn in Group B, they will begin their campaign against South Africa on February 21 at the National Stadium, Karachi.

Afghanistan had an excellent run in ODI cricket in 2024. The fantastic year saw them record series wins against South Africa, Bangladesh, Ireland, and Zimbabwe.

The Asian underdogs, who have traditionally relied on their spinners, will keep a close eye on veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi. The 40-year-old, who earlier in November 2024 announced that the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 would be his last ODI tournament, has now shared his thoughts about his future in the format.

Speaking to the ICC, Nabi emphasized that the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 might not be his last ODI tournament. However, he stressed that he will play fewer ODIs to give youngsters more opportunities.

Nabi said, “These might not be my last ODIs, I will probably play less ODIs and give chances to the youngsters to build experience. I’ve discussed with the senior players and in the high-level games, maybe or maybe not, we’ll see. It will depend on my fitness.

He further added that it is his dream to share the field with his son Eisakhil, who recently represented Afghanistan in the 2024 Under-19 World Cup.

He added, “It’s my dream. Hopefully we can do it. He is doing very well … he is a hard worker and I’m also pushing him to do work.

Nabi has represented Afghanistan in 305 international games, taking 277 wickets. His ODI record includes 172 wickets in 170 matches at an average of 32. He played a crucial role in Afghanistan’s remarkable run in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
