Twitter slams Mohammad Rizwan's 'lazy' running against Nepal in Asia Cup 2023 opener
Mohammad Rizwan scored 44 of 50 balls in the first match of Asia Cup 2023 against Nepal.
Asia Cup made its return to Pakistani soil after 15 years. Hosts Pakistan are taking on Nepal, in the tournament’s opening fixture at Multan Cricket Stadium in Multan. Pakistan captain Babar Azam won the toss and elected to bat against Nepal. Babar Azam was looking to put up a big score in the game. Nepal bowlers have done a decent job with the ball and haven’t let Pakistani batters go after them at any moment. This strategy forced Pakistan batters to commit mistakes in the innings. Wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan committed a schoolboy mistake and became a reason for Internet memes.
Rizwan jumped rather than diving
Nepal picked up two wickets inside six overs, and then Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan (44) added 86 runs in 17 overs. Rizwan in the 23rd over played a cover drive and ran for a single. Dipendra Singh Airee was there in the covers to pick up the ball and aim it towards the non-striker’s end. Rizwan was almost there, but rather than marking himself safe in the non-striker’s position, he tried to save himself from the throw. Airee aimed it well enough to give Pakistan another setback in the innings. Rizwan jumped up in the air to save himself from the throw rather than diving to reach the non-strikers end.
Social media slams Rizwan
Rizwan’s jump gave Airee’s throw a chance to hit the stumps. Rizwan’s schoolboy error cost him his wicket. On social media, Rizwan has been brutally criticised for having a casual approach to his running between the wickets. Fans have scolded him for being careless in the game. They showed their disappointment as Rizwan’s innings was cut short due to the run-out. Rizwan scored 44 runs in 50 balls and added 86 runs, along with captain Babar Azam, for the third wicket. A few of the Pakistani fans have also lashed out at Rizwan and called him a lazy runner in the game.
Here’s how twitter reacted to Mohammad Rizwan’s run out:
Pakistan have lost four wickets as the 30-overs game is done of the first innings. Pakistan skipper Babar Azam is going strong in the innings with a half-century. Before Rizwan, opener Imam-ul-Haq also got run out in the the powerplay. Karan KC and Dipendra Singh Airee bowled magnificent opening spells. Karan KC, with his pace, got the wicket of Fakhar Zaman who was batting at 14 runs. This is Nepal’s first game in any major event in their history. As per a few reports, local schools have announced a holiday on Wednesday to celebrate Nepal’s cricket success.
