Mohammed Shami last played any cricket in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.

Veteran Indian speedster Mohammed Shami is likely to make a comeback in competitive cricket for his domestic state team Bengal in the upcoming Ranji Trophy tournament in October, according to reports.

Shami has been out of action since the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 final against Australia. The right-arm speedster was the highest wicket-taker of the tournament. It was later revealed that he played in the World Cup 2023 with an ankle injury.

In February 2024, the 33-year-old underwent surgery in London and is now aiming to comeback through Ranji Trophy in October.

Mohammed Shami is likely to play one or two Ranji Trophy games before New Zealand tests

According to a report in PTI, Mohammed Shami, who is undergoing rehabilitation at the NCA in Bangalore after his ankle injury, is likely to make a comeback in competitive cricket for his domestic side Bengal in the upcoming Ranji Trophy.

The report added that the senior Indian speedster will play either one or two matches for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy in October.

The PTI report stated that Shami aims to return in the home test series against New Zealand, which will start on October 19 before the tour of Australia, where India will play five tests.

The Indian selectors are not willing to rush Shami and risk any recurrence of the injury and hence he is all but certain to miss the Bangladesh tests, starting September 19.

Recently, BCCI secretary Jay Shah also provided a crucial update on Shami. Shah said that they need Shami for the test series in Australia.
