"I'm 100%…" Mohammed Shami provides fitness update ahead of Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25
Mohammed Shami has been out of action since completion of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
Indian pacer Mohammad Shami has been putting in hard yards to return to the Indian side ahead of India’s next big assignment – Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The speedster recently has provided an update on his fitness. After suffering an ankle injury during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, Shami has almost missed a full year of cricket. With the all-important Border-Gavaskar Trophy coming up next, India would be keeping a close eye on Shami’s fitness.
Mohammed Shami was seen practicing in the nets following the first IND vs NZ test
Shami was expected to return to action during the three-match test series between India and New Zealand, however, due to swelling on his knee, he missed out on getting selected for the New Zealand tests, as confirmed by Indian captain Rohit Sharma.
After the first test of the ongoing three-match test series between India and New Zealand in Bengaluru, Shami was seen bowling with full intensity in the nets.
After videos of him bowling in Bengaluru nets went viral, Shami provided more details about his fitness.
“It felt great yesterday because I had been bowling with half a run-up on and off since I can’t put too much stress on my body, Yesterday, we decided that I would bowl properly, and I gave my 100%. It felt great, [and] the results are good. Hopefully, I’ll be back on track soon,” said Mohammed Shami in an event in Gurgaon as quoted by many.
When asked if he is pain-free now, the Indian speedster said “100%” giving Indian team a big boost before the first test in Perth.
Shami not rushing his comeback
Shami, who represents Bengal in domestic cricket, admitted that a few domestic games would be beneficial before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Shami also emphasized the fact he is not looking to rush his way back to the field, the Indian pacer said “The Australia series is still far away, the only thing I want to focus on is how to keep myself fit, and how strong I can be before going there. I know what kind of an attack we want for that test series, so it’s better I spend some more time on the ground before going. If I get fit and I get a gap of eight to ten days, then it’s better I play one or two domestic matches before going to Australia“
If his recovery continues smoothly, Shami’s return could provide a significant boost to India’s pace attack. Shami only played the first test at Adelaide during the last Australian tour, before flying back home with a wrist injury.
