Mohammed Shami has been out of action since last year’s World Cup final.
India’s path to the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final has taken a hit after their home test series loss against New Zealand.
Fans and critics alike expected the Indian team to win all five home test matches against Bangladesh (two games) and New Zealand (three games) before departing to Australia for the ultimate showdown.
However, after going down to the Kiwis in the first two tests of the series, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has become even more interesting as now South Africa and New Zealand are back into WTC final contention.
Further, India have been hurt by the absence of senior pacer Mohammed Shami. Shami, who has been sidelined since the World Cup 2023 final due to an ankle injury, has been working hard to get back to match fitness.
However, he did not make the 18-man squad announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the tour of Australia, although a comeback in the middle of the series for Shami is not ruled out yet. It was, in fact, hinted in Shami’s latest Instagram post.

After missing out on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy squad, Shami took to Instagram to share a message with the fans and the BCCI. In a short video, he can be seen pushing through an intense gym workout. Alongside the video, Shami posted a heartfelt message, expressing his disappointment while promising to continue his efforts to make a comeback soon.
“Putting in my efforts and getting better with my bowling fitness day-by-day,” Shami wrote. “Will continue working hard towards getting ready for the match and to play domestic red ball cricket. Sorry to all cricket fans and BCCI too, but very soon I’m ready to play red ball cricket, love you all.” Mohammed Shami wrote on Instagram.
Shami’s absence has opened opportunities for the likes of Harshit Rana, Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna. Indian fast bowlers have been instrumental in India’s last two test series wins in Australia. With the experience of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj already at their disposal, India will have hope for a strong bowling performance from their third pacer.
