Mohammed Shami said that he will play in domestic cricket if not picked in the national team.
Indian pacer Mohammed Shami said that he has no plans to retire anytime soon. The fast bowler was honest to say that he will pull the curtains down on his career when he feels bored.
Mohammed Shami has been out of action for a while. He was not part of the Indian squad for Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, with his last game for India coming in the final of ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in March. With nine wickets in five games in the tournament, he finished as the team’s joint highest wicket-taker with Varun Chakaravarthy.
Notably, Shami has not played a test match for a long time. His last test match for India was the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 final against Australia in June 2023.
The day I get bored, I will leave: Mohammed Shami on his retirement

During a conversation with News24, Shami said that he has no plans to retire anytime soon. He also added that he will hang up his boots when he feels bored.
“If someone has a problem, tell me. Whose life will become better if I take retirement? Mai kiski zindagi mein patthar bana hua hu ki tumhe mujhse retirement chahiye? (Tell me whose life have I become a stone that you want me to retire?) The day I get bored, I will leave,” he said.
The 34-year-old added that he will play in domestic cricket if he is not picked in the national team.
“You don’t pick me, don’t play me, I don’t care. But I will keep working hard. You don’t pick me in international, I will play domestic. I will keep playing somewhere or the other,” he said.
“Retirement and such decisions are made when you start feeling bored, when you don’t want to wake up at 7 am for a Test. That is not the time for me now. I’ll be up at 5 if you want me to,” he added.
Notably, Shami is not part of India squad for Asia Cup 2025. He is expected to be picked in the ODI series against Australia in October. He might also make his test comeback during the home test series against West Indies in October.
Shami is currently busy with Duleep Trophy 2025-26, where he is part of East Zone team. The domestic tournament will commenced on August 28.
