“I only have one dream left..."- Mohammed Shami on what he wants to achieve before retiring

Mohammed Shami said that he wants to win the ICC ODI World Cup and bring it home.
Veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has said that he has one dream left in his career, which is to win the ICC ODI World Cup. He also opened up about Indian Cricket Team’s defeat in the final ICC Cricket World Cup in 2023.
Mohammed Shami came up with a wonderful performance in the previous edition of ICC Cricket World Cup in 2023. But his effort went in vain as the Men in Blue lost the final to Australia, facing a heartbreaking loss. Notably, India did not lose any game in the tournament except for the final.
Shami was part of the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team that won the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in March. With nine scalps in five matches, he was the joint highest wicket-taker for the team in the tournament.

Speaking to News24, the 34-year-old pacer said that he has a dream to win the ICC ODI World Cup for India. He also said that they could not fulfil this dream in the previous edition.
“I only have one dream left, that is to win the ODI World Cup. I want to be a part of that team and perform that win the ODI World Cup and bring it home”, he said.
“We were very close in 2023. We had a gut feeling, but we also had a fear that we were winning non-stop, and it was the knockout stage. There was some fear. But the enthusiasm and belief of the fans motivated us. This was a dream that could have been fulfilled, but maybe it was not in my luck,” he added.
Meanwhile, the next edition of ICC Cricket World Cup will take place in October-November 2027. South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia will host the tournament. Notably, Shami will be 37 years old by next ODI World Cup, and his selection might be doubtful in the squad.
Shami is currently busy with Duleep Trophy 2025-26, where he is part of East Zone team. He is expected to next play for India during the home test series against West Indies in October. The right-arm pacer was not part of Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025.
