Mohammed Shami was not picked in the Indian squad for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand at home.
Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has found himself in the middle of some unwanted trouble after being snubbed from the ODI squad for the series against New Zealand. Shami has been out of the Indian squad since playing the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final against the Kiwis in Dubai in March last year.
After being repeatedly snubbed from the Indian squads from all formats, now the Indian pacer has been summoned by the Election Commission for a hearing based on their Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process that began on December 16 last year.
As per reports in India Today, Shami, along with his brother Mohammed Kaif, were issued a notice from Kartju Nagar School in the Jadavpur area of South Kolkata asking them to appear before the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO). Their hearing is related to certain discrepancies found in their voter enumeration forms during the revision process that began last year.
Mohammed Shami’s next hearing between January 9 and 11

Meanwhile, as per the notice, Shami could not attend the hearing on the scheduled date on January 5, as he is currently in Rajkot representing Bengal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26. Shami has enrolled himself as a voter from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Ward No. 93, which falls under the Rashbehari Assembly constituency. Though originally from Amroha, UP, he has been living in Bengal for his professional domestic career for the last few years.
The India Today report further said that the names of Shami and his brother surfaced due to complications in their enumeration forms. Reportedly, there have been some discrepancies in progeny mapping and self-mapping. Shami’s next hearing has been scheduled between January 9 and 11. Meanwhile, Bengal’s next Vijay Hazare trophy match is against Hyderabad on January 6 in Rajkot.
The Indian pacer has found himself amid controversies related to his fitness as well. The management has been repeatedly axing him from the national team across formats, citing fitness reasons. However, the Indian pacer has rubbished all claims, saying he is absolutely fit to play games for India when he is fit and available and playing games in the Vijay Hazare trophy. Shami has picked up 11 wickets from five games for Bengal in the tournament so far.
