Mohammed Shami returned to competitive cricket last month.
Mohammed Shami has been a key component of the Indian pace attack in test cricket since making his debut in 2013. Renowned for his impeccable seam position and ability to extract movement even on flawless surfaces, Shami has emerged as one of the most successful fast bowlers of the current generation.
The 34-year-old Bengal fast bowler has been India’s go to bowler in the longest format of the game for a long time, both home and away.
Shami has played a vital role for the Indian Cricket Team against Australia. He played a crucial role in India’s maiden test series victory on Australian soil in 2018-19. He was also the leading wicket-taker for India in the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, which was held in Australia.
Unfortunately, Mohammed Shami was initially not included in India’s squad for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 due to an ankle injury. However, the BCCI is closely monitoring his recovery, for a potential return in the last couple of test matches of the series.
On that note, let’s take a look at the Mohammed Shami’s test record in Australia.
Mohammed Shami test record and stats in Australia:
Mohammed Shami has featured in eight test matches on Australian soil so far, claiming 31 wickets at a decent bowling average of 32.16. The speedster has two five-wicket hauls to his name in Australia in test cricket.
Shami’s first test fifer in Australia came in 2014 at Sydney Cricket Ground in the fourth and last test of the series. Shami was the only positive for India in an overall dismal bowling performance by the visitors. The Indian speedster claimed 5/112, including key wickets of Shane Watson and Chris Rogers, to restrict Australia to a first innings score of 572.
His second five-wicket haul in Australia came in 2018 in Perth during Australia’s second innings. Shami ended the innings with bowling figures of 6/56. India lost the test, but Shami’s fiery spell kept the team in contention after conceding a 43-run first-innings lead.
