Mohammed Shami was ruled out of the ongoing South Africa test series.

In a revelation that sheds light on the extraordinary commitment of Indian pacer Mohammed Shami, it has been disclosed that he took regular injections during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, and was playing through intense pain. The toll of his determination is evident, as Shami is now absent from South Africa test series due to a chronic heel issue, sidelining him after a failing in the fitness test conducted by BCCI medical team.

Shami’s absence has been particularly felt in the ongoing test series against South Africa, with concerns over the performance of the bowling line-up.

Mohammed Shami was taking regular injections

Shami’s absence from the ongoing test series is a direct consequence of his sacrifices during the World Cup. Despite grappling with a chronic left heel issue, the fast bowler emerged as the highest wicket-taker in the tournament, picking up an impressive 24 wickets in 7 matches at an economy of 5.26. The revelation comes from a reliable source, a former Bengal teammate of Shami, who disclosed the extent of the fast bowler’s dedication.

The source told PTI that, “Shami has a chronic left heel issue. A lot of people don’t know that he took injections regularly during World Cup and played the entire tournament through pain, But you must understand that as you grow older, recovery from each niggle or big injury takes that more time.”

A former India bowler expressed skepticism about the readiness of the next generation of pacers, noting,

“The problem is India’s next generation of pacers don’t evoke the same kind of excitement and confidence that Bumrah, Shami, Ishant and Siraj produced.

Concerns were raised about Prasidh Krishna’s limited experience in first-class cricket, with the opinion that Avesh Khan’s inclusion in the squad for second SA test may not make a significant difference unless given a consistent opportunity.

Mohammed Shami’s journey in the ODI World Cup, playing through pain and making significant contributions, reflects his indomitable spirit.
