Mohammed Shami is playing his first match of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

Mohammed Shami finally got a chance to play a match in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and struck on his first ball. This happened in the ongoing 21st match of the ICC CWC 2023 between India and New Zealand, being played in Dharamshala on October 22, 2023.

Both India and New Zealand came into this encounter having won all four of their matches thus far. The toss was going to be important for both teams in Dharamshala as the pitch is helpful for pacers up front and then helps the spinners as well.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bowl first and also revealed that Suryakumar Yadav has replaced Hardik Pandya in the XI and making his World Cup debut. Furthermore, Mohammed Shami replaced Shardul Thakur to strengthen the bowling in Pandya’s absence.

Jasprit Bumrah got things started with a maiden over, and Mohammed Siraj kept the pressure on. Devon Conway and Will Young both appeared wary of the Indian pacers, who moved the ball significantly in the air and off the pitch.

Mohammed Siraj delivered a complete half-volley at Devon Conway's pads in the fourth over, and his eyes brightened up at the freebie. Conway looked to open his account by flicking the ball towards the leg-side but playing it in the air.

Shreyas Iyer, who had been assigned to the forward square leg for this purpose, dived full length to his right and collected the ball with both hands, sending Conway back for a 9-ball duck.

Mohammed Shami bowls Will Young to end his vigil on his first ball of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023

After Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj had rattled the New Zealand batters and kept them quiet, Rohit Sharma thought of introducing Mohammed Shami into the attack. The veteran bowler had warmed the bench for the first four matches.

This was due to Hardik Pandya, Mohammad Siraj, and Jasprit Bumrah forming a formidable pace attack with support from Shardul Thakur. Shami bided his time and made an impact when he was asked to bowl.

His first ball was pitched on the shorter side of a length, near the off-stump. Young trying to dab it down the third man for a single, didn’t account for the slight inwards movement. The ball took the inside edge and hit the stumps.
