Morne Morkel has parted ways with Pakistan Cricket Team.

Morne Morkel has quit as the Pakistan team bowling coach after the poor outing by the bowlers of the team in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Pakistan got eliminated after the league stage itself and failed to qualify for the semi-finals.

Former South African bowler Morne Morkel was engaged as Pakistan’s bowling coach in June 2023. He previously represented Namibia at the Australia 2022 T20 World Cup. He is the bowling coach for the Lucknow Super Giants of the IPL and the Durban Super Giants of the SA20.

Morkel had taken over for Shaun Tait, but given Pakistan’s poor bowling performance in the World Cup 2023, he elected to step down on his own. Pakistan finished fifth in the tournament, with only four victories from nine games.

This could be attributed to Pakistan’s poor bowling performance in the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2023. Haris Rauf allowed 533 runs for his 16 wickets in 9 matches, the most by a bowler in a single World Cup edition. Shaheen Afridi, Pakistan’s spearhead, conceded 481 runs in 9 games for 18 wickets.

Only 12 wickets were taken in the competition by Pakistani spinners Iftikhar Ahmed, Usama Mir, Mohammad Nawaz, and Shadab Khan.

“Morne Morkel has resigned as the bowling coach of the Pakistan Men’s team. The former South Africa fast bowler joined the Pakistan team on a six-month contract in June this year. Morkel’s first assignment with the men’s team was their tour to Sri Lanka for the two-match Test series.

Pakistan Cricket Board will announce his replacement in due course. Pakistan’s next assignment is a three-match Test series against Australia scheduled to take place from December 14, 2023, to January 7, 2024, in Australia,” PCB announced in a statement.
