India and USA locked horns in their opening game of the T20 World Cup 2026 on February 7 (Saturday) at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Men-in-Blue won the encounter by 29 runs to commence their journey in the tournament on a winning note.

At the start, the USA won the toss and opted to field first. The USA bowlers gave a mini heart-attack to Indian fans at the beginning, picking four wickets in the powerplay overs. Ishan Kishan (20), Abhishek Sharma (0), Tilak Varma (25), and Shivam Dube (0) went to the dugout within the first six overs.

Rinku Singh (6) and Hardik Pandya (5) also lost their wickets for single digits, with India railing at 77/6 at one stage. However, Suryakumar Yadav came to the team’s rescue and scored a marvellous half-century. With his unbeaten knock (84* off 49), he propelled the team to a decent total of 161/9.

USA pacer Shadley van Schalkwyk clinched a four-wicket haul; however, his efforts went in vain as their batters could not hold their ground for long against India’s dominating bowling attack.

Mohammed Siraj dismissed both USA openers, while Arshdeep Singh grabbed the crucial wicket of captain Monank Patel. Milind Kumar (34) and Sanjay Krishnamurthi (37) were the highest run-scorers for the USA, who eventually ended with 132/8 on the scoreboard. Suryakumar was adjudged Player of the Match for his stunning batting show.

With an outstanding 84-run innings against the USA, India’s Suryakumar Yadav has become the leading run-scorer in the T20 World Cup 2026, followed by West Indies’ Shimron Hetmyer (64) and Pakistan’s Sahibzada Farhan (47).

Richie Berrington (42) from Scotland is the next batter in the list, followed by Scott Edwards (Netherlands), Sanjay Krishnamurthi (USA), and Shubham Rajane (USA) with 37 runs each.
