The first-ever Border-Gavaskar Trophy series was played in 1996.
India and Australia stand as the two heavyweights of international cricket. The two nations have a remarkable record in the longest format, sharing 14 ICC test maces between them (including the World Test Championship).
Over the years, these two nations have contested in numerous memorable test series. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which began in 1996, is named in honour of two of the greatest players from India and Australia in the 20th century – Sunil Gavaskar and Allan Border.
Bowlers have played a key role in adding excitement to the contest between the sides. Indian bowlers have dominated in spin-friendly conditions, while Australian bowlers have been more effective on seaming tracks.

5. Ben Hilfenhaus (AUS) – 27 wickets, 2011-12
Former Australian pacer Ben Hilfenhaus snared 27 wickets at an average of 17.22 during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 201//12 at home.
His best bowling performance in the series was 5/75, which came during the Melbourne test where he tore through the Indian lineup to restrict the visitors to 282 runs in the first innings.
Hilfenhaus’ heroics helped Australia whitewash India 4-0 in the four-match series.
4. Anil Kumble (IND) – 27 wickets, 2004
Former Indian leg spinner Anil Kumble was India’s star during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2004. Kumble ended the four-match series with 27 wickets at an average of 25.37.
His best bowling performance in the series came in Chennai, where he picked up 7/48 to help India bowl out Australia for 235 runs in the first-innings. The game ultimately ended in a draw.
Australia won the series 2-1.
3. Ravichandran Ashwin (IND) – 29 wickets, 2013
Ravichandran Ashwin is one of the most successful spinners of the 21st century. His most remarkable performance came during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2013 at home, where he took 29 wickets in four games at an average of 20.1.
Ashwin’s magnificent effort led India to a 4-0 whitewash over Australia for the first time in their test history. His best bowling performance in the series, 7/103, came during the first test in Chennai. He took four five-wicket hauls in the series.
2. Jasprit Bumrah (IND) – 31 wickets, 2024-25
Indian speedster Jasprit Bumrah is regarded as one of the best fast bowlers of all time. He was the leading wicket-taker in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
The 31-year-old pacer picked up 31 wickets at an average of only 12.64 and carried the Indian bowling attack. His best bowling figures of the series, 6/76, came during the third test in Brisbane.
Also, he claimed 8/92 across both innings in Perth and captained India to a thumping 295-run victory.
1. Harbhajan Singh (IND) – 32 wickets, 2001
Former off-spinner Harbhajan Singh holds the record of taking the most wickets in a single edition of the BGT. The 2001 series at home saw India defeat Australia 2-1 in the three-match series and Harbhajan played a starring role in it.
Harbhajan Singh led the Indian bowling attack throughout the series by picking up 32 wickets in just three matches at an average of just 17. He bagged four five-wicket hauls in the series and also became the first Indian bowler to take a test hat-trick.
