MS Dhoni wants to use the trademark ‘Captain Cool’ name for his sports businesses.

Former India captain MS Dhoni has filed a trademark application for his popular nickname ‘Captain Cool’. The former India wicket-keeper wants the exclusive rights to use the nickname for his sports and entertainment businesses like sports training, coaching services and training services.

Notably, the nickname captain cool has been associated with MS Dhoni for a long time. Fans and media have always used the term for the keeper-batter for his calm attitude on the field. According to reports, the Trade Marks Registry portal has accepted the application and is advertising it.

While speaking to The Indian Express, Dhoni’s lawyer Mansi Aggarwal revealed that they faced some hurdles while filing the trademark application. The registry had an objection that a similar trademark was in use and it might confuse people.

“Delighted to share a recent development from the field of trademark law that underscores the evolving role of personality rights and acquired distinctiveness in overcoming relative grounds for refusal,” she said.

However, Dhoni’s legal team managed to convince that ‘Captain Cool’ has been closely associated with the cricketer for a long time, and widely used phrase by media and fans over the years. They also argued that since the trademark will be used for sports and entertainment services, the confusion is very unlikely.

MS Dhoni is often dubbed as most succcesful Indian skipper

Notably, Dhoni has often been termed as the most successful skipper for Indian Cricket Team. He led India to all three major ICC titles in the white-ball formats. Under Dhoni, India won the ICC T20 World Cup 2007, ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, and ICC Champions Trophy 2013.

Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket in August 2020. However, he is still active in Indian Premier League (IPL). In the recent 2025 edition, he captained Chennai Super Kings (CSK). However, his team failed to reach the playoffs of the tournament.

Earlier this month, Dhoni was also inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for his contribution to Indian cricket. He became the 11th Indian player to get recognition.
