MS Dhoni captained CSK in IPL 2025 after Ruturaj Gaikwad’s injury.
Since the last few seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL), MS Dhoni’s retirement has been the talk of the town. While some cricket experts believe Dhoni should pull the curtains down on his career, many fans want him to continue playing for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the tournament.
After skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of IPL 2025 midway due to an elbow injury, Dhoni took the leadership of the side for the remainder of the tournament. However, the Men in Yellow had a terrible season, finishing at the last spot in the points table with just four wins across 14 games.
Moreover, the five-time champions failed to qualify for the playoffs for two consecutive seasons for the first time in the IPL history. Notably, MS underwent a knee surgery after IPL 2023 and made a comeback to the tournament in the next two seasons. However, he was seen struggling while running on the field in both the seasons, especially in IPL 2025.

Who will take care of my knee injury: MS Dhoni’s cheeky response to fan’s request to play in IPL 2026
Recently, Dhoni was appointed as the brand ambassador of the ‘Go Chase’ campaign by Asian Footwears. During an event of the campaign, the World Cup-winning captain interacted with his fans. While Dhoni was speaking to the host, a fan from the crowd urged him to play in IPL 2026.
“Sir you have to play IPL 2026,” the fan shouted.
When the host repeated the fan’s request to Dhoni, the CSK stalwart gave a cheeky reply: “Arrey mere jo ghutno mein dard hain uska care kon karega (Who will take care of my knee injury)”.
Notably, the former CSK skipper has not clarified his stance on playing IPL 2026 so far. The 44-year-old has always maintained that he will make a decision after analysing his knee injury. In the last season, the wicket-keeper batter scored 196 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 135.17.
Recently, Dhoni had informed that Gaikwad will return to lead CSK in IPL 2026. He also added that the franchise will look to fill its loopholes in the batting department during the IPL 2026 mini-auction.
