Mushfiqur Rahim made his ODI debut for Bangladesh in 2006.
Following Bangladesh’s failure to advance to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semi-finals, Mushfiqur Rahim announced his retirement from ODI cricket. In the blockbuster tournament against India and New Zealand, the 37-year-old wicket-keeper-batter ended his 50-over career after scoring just two runs in as many games.
Mushfiqur explained his choice in a Facebook post, stating that he has faced several difficulties in the previous two weeks. After Australia lost to India in the semi-final on Tuesday in Dubai, the veteran made the decision to retire on the same day that Steve Smith said goodbye to ODI cricket.
“I am announcing my retirement from the ODI format as of today. Alhamdulillah for everything. While our achievements may have been limited on a global level, one thing is certain: whenever I stepped onto the field for my country, I gave more than 100% with dedication and honesty.
The last few weeks have been very challenging for me, and I have come to realize that this is my destiny. Lastly, I would like to deeply thank my family, friends, and my fans, for whom I have played cricket for the last 19 years,” Rahim posted on his Facebook page.
Mushfiqur, who was born in Bogra, made his ODI debut in 2006 against Zimbabwe in Harare, and he played for 19 years. Mushfiqur is only available to play test cricket for the Tigers because he also retired from T20Is in 2022.
Rahim was first noticed in the 2007 ICC ODI World Cup when he was picked over experienced Khaled Mashud. He hit an important half-century when Bangladesh defeated India in that World Cup and knocked them out of the tournament.
Mushfiqur also holds the Bangladesh record for most consecutive ODIs, having played 92 matches between 2010 and 2016. On that note, let’s take a look at his numbers in ODI cricket.
