PM Narendra Modi condoles sad demise of former Indian cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi

Former Indian legendary cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi passed away aged 77.

In between the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India, there is sad news around the cricket fans. Former Indian captain and legendary left-arm spinner Bishan Singh Bedi passed away at the age of 77. Bishan Singh Bedi underwent surgery two weeks ago and was hospitalized after that. Bedi was residing in Delhi with his son, Angad Bedi, and daughter-in-law, Neha Dhupia. Bedi played for India in the late 70s and 80s and represented India in 67 test matches.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to the former Indian left-arm spinner, Bishan Singh Bedi. Narendra Modi tweeted, “Deeply saddened by the passing of noted cricketer Shri Bishan Singh Bedi Ji. His passion for the sport was unwavering, and his exemplary bowling performances led India to numerous memorable victories. He will continue to inspire future generations of cricketers. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Bishan Singh Bedi was born in Amritsar on September 25, 1946. Bedi made his test cricket debut in January 1967 against West Indies at Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata. Bedi played 67 test matches for India and picked up 266 test wickets. Bedi was among the top leading wicket-takers in test cricket and bid farewell to his cricket career at The Oval against England in the 1979 tour. Bedi was also a member of Indian team during the 1975 and 1979 World Cups.

Bishan Singh Bedi was awarded the Padma Shri by Indian government in 1970, and in 2004, Bedi was awarded the Col. CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award. Bishan began his domestic career at the age of 15 in Northern Punjab and then moved to Delhi in 1974. Bedi also played for Northamptonshire in English county and finished his first-class career with 1560 wickets in 370 first-class games. He was known as having an outspoken personality.
