Nathan Lyon believes he can play a role in any conditions.

Australia spinner Nathan Lyon has finally broken his silence and said that he was disappointed after being dropped from the playing XI for the third test during Australia’s tour of the West Indies 2025. The right-arm off-spinner was dropped from Australia’s playing XI as the management decided to pick four pacers for the pink-ball test, which was played at a seam-friendly wicket in Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica.

Australia replaced Scott Boland with Lyon in the playing XI. The decision turned out to be fruitful as Australia won the encounter by 176 runs. They bowled out the West Indies for just 123 runs and 27 runs in the game with a dominant pace attack.

Mitchell Starc, who was playing his 100th test, picked a six-wicket haul in the second innings to bundle the West Indies for just 27 runs. The left-arm pacer broke plenty of records with his incredible spell and won Player of the Match and Player of the Series awards as well.

I believe I can play a role in any conditions: Nathan Lyon

During a conversation with ESPN Cricinfo, Lyon said that he was disappointed after being dropped from the final test against the West Indies. He believes that he can play a role in any conditions.

“There’s no point hiding behind it, I was disappointed with the decision, but I totally understood it. Disappointed on a number of levels that: One, I believe I can play a role in any conditions, and I still honestly believe that,” he said.

“And then honestly, the other one was not to walk out on the field with Starcy (Mitchell Starc). I’ve played 90-odd Test matches with Starcy, so to be able to walk out there with him in his 100th would have been amazing. But I was still there, running the drinks, and still part of it,” he added.

However, the Australian spinner also added that selectors made the right call to pick four seamers in the match.

“I want to play every game for Australia, and I’ve just got that belief that I can play a role in any conditions, as every cricketer should have that belief. But at the end of the day, we can sit here and say hats off to them, they made the right call,” he further said.

During the series, Lyon picked nine wickets in two matches at an average of 18.33. After winning the third test, Australia completed a whitewash in the three-match series.

The Pat Cummins-led side won the first test by 159 runs and the second test by 133 runs. Meanwhile, Australia also whitewashed the West Indies in the five-match T20I series, which took place after the test series.
