Nathan Lyon is currently engaged in Australia’s test tour of the West Indies.

Veteran Australia spinner Nathan Lyon has made a big revelation about his retirement plans from international cricket. The right-arm spinner is currently part Australia squad in the ongoing test series against the West Indies.

The Pat Cummins-led side are clashing with West Indies in a three-match away series, which is their first campaign in ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle. The visitors won the first test by a huge margin of 159 runs.

After the victory in the first test, Nathan Lyon passed on the legendary duty of songmaster to Alex Carey. He held the role of Australia’s songmaster for over 12 years. In 2013, Lyon was handed the honour by Mike Hussey following the latter’s retirement.

Nathan Lyon is not considering retirement anytime soon

While speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, the right-arm spinner clarified that he does not have any retirement plans as of now. Nathan Lyon added that he still has a dream to win a test series in India and England. He is also looking forward to playing the ICC WTC 2025-27 final.

“I’ve been very honoured to first lead the song, but to have it for 12, 13 years, it’s been one of the biggest highlights of my career. I’ve been thinking about it for a while now, but this definitely doesn’t mean I’m retiring anytime soon. There’s no talk about me retiring or even thoughts coming in my head,” he said.

“I’ve always said I want to win away in India, and I want to win away in England. Obviously, we’ve got that opportunity in a couple of years’ time, but we’ve also got to take it Test by Test and make sure we’re doing everything here and getting the games here in West Indies right. Then we’ve got a massive summer at home with the Ashes. But also, another World Test Championship final will be on my cards,” he further added.

Nathan Lyon has played 138 tests for Australia so far, picking 556 wickets across 257 innings. He is the third highest wicket-taker for Australia in tests after Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath. Although Lyon does not feature in white-ball cricket for Australia, he is a frontline spinner for Australia in tests.

Meanwhile, the 37-year-old captured three wickets in the recent first test against the West Indies. The second test will commence on July 3 at National Cricket Stadium, Grenada. Australia lead the three-match series 1-0.
