In a dramatic turn of events on day two of the second test, New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips produced a sensational catch to dismiss Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne, who was just ten runs shy of a well-deserved century on Saturday.

Labuschagne was under pressure coming into the Christchurch test after a string of low scores to his name. The right-handed batter had anchored the Australian innings from one end when the wickets were falling on regular intervals. However, his dismissal proved to be a turning point, leaving the tourists at 221/8 in reply to New Zealand’s first innings total of 162.

The incident happened in the 61st over of Australia’s first innings when Marnus Labuschagne was eyeing a much-needed century after a string of low scores. The veteran batter, along with Mitchell Starc, had already formed a crucial 32-run partnership for the eighth wicket.

However, New Zealand’s captain, Tim Southee, who was bowling the 61st over, got rid of Labuschagne, who was batting at 90. The veteran pacer bowled a good-length delivery outside off-stump as the Australian batter played a well-timed aerial cut shot.

Glenn Phillips, who was standing at wide gully, flew towards his right to grab a one-handed screamer, which provides a crucial breakthrough in the context of the game. Despite losing Labuschagne at 221, Australia managed to add 35 more runs to their first innings total, with Mitchell Starc and skipper Pat Cummins playing crucial cameos.

In response to Australia’s 256, New Zealand have had a positive start to their second innings, placing themselves at 134/2 in 50 overs. The hosts end their day on a high note, with Tom Latham remaining unbeaten at 65 runs.

Veteran batter Kane Williamson notched up another half-century and was looking to score big before getting dismissed by Pat Cummins. Williamson scored 51 runs during his stay at the crease. New Zealand have a lead of 40 runs at the end of day two.
