Gus Atkinson has been replaced by Olly Stone in England’s ODI squad for Australia series.

England fast bowler Olly Stone will have a chance to add to his eight ODI caps in the upcoming ODI series against Australia after being named in the squad as a replacement for Gus Atkinson.

On Monday, the ECB announced that Atkinson won’t be part of the five-match ODI series against Australia, which will start on September 19 and conclude on September 29.

“The England quick will play no part in our upcoming white-ball series against Australia,” the ECB said, while announcing Stone as Atkinson’s replacement.

Why will Gus Atkinson not play in ODIs against Australia?

Atkinson, who dealt with a tight quad during the third test against Sri Lanka, has been rested from the ODIs against Australia.

The 26-year-old has had a busy summer, having played all six tests – three each against West Indies and Sri Lanka.

The ECB confirmed, “Surrey and England seamer Gus Atkinson will be rested for the upcoming Metro Bank Men’s ODI series against Australia. Nottinghamshire’s Olly Stone will take his place in the squad.”

Atkinson has played nine ODIs so far, in which he took 11 wickets. Stone has featured in eight ODIs so far, and taken eight wickets.

Before the ODI series, the two teams will compete in a three-match T20I series.
