Pakistan had a poor time in T20 World Cup 2026, where they reached Super 8 stage.

Pakistan’s poor campaign at the ICC T20 World Cup was only days ago. However, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has quickly stepped in, working towards redefining the future of the team. As per the reports in Geo news, PCB is all set to appoint a new head coach for their Test team. This position is lying vacant following the exit of Azhar Mahmood last year.

Azhar Mahmood was with the team as an interim head coach during the recently concluded Test series against South Africa. Currently, Pakistan are placed fifth on the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 points table following a draw against South Africa last October.

Former Pakistani skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed is set to become the next head coach of the Pakistani Test team. According to Geo News, Sarfaraz is currently working with the Pakistan Shaheens in the UAE for T20 and one-day series against the England Lions. He will be taking up the coaching role during the Test series between Pakistan and Bangladesh in May.

Sarfaraz has managed to prove himself after the recent success with the Asia Cup-winning U19 team, which he mentored. During the tournament, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi was approached by a group of fans who urged him to give the role of head coach to the Sarfaraz.

According to the report, it is expected that a formal announcement regarding Sarfaraz’s appointment will be made soon. Sarfaraz will possibly take up his new role soon as Pakistan Shaheens’ series against England Lions got cancelled due to war in Middle East.

The wicket-keeper batter has played 54 Tests for Pakistan and has amassed 3,031 runs, including four centuries and 21 half-centuries. He led the side in 13 of these games and won four of them, including a famous win at Lord’s against England in 2018.

In the limited overs format, Sarfaraz Ahmed featured in 117 ODIs, scoring 2,315 runs with two centuries and 11 fifties, and played 61 T20Is, accumulating 818 runs.

He captained Pakistan to the 2017 Champions Trophy title, beating arch-rivals India in the final. This was his biggest achievement as the captain of the side. With the same enthusiasm, Sarfaraz will now look to mentor the Test team to new heights.
