Parthiv Patel slams Rajdeep Sardesai after the latter credits Mumbai Ranji team for Indian cricket's success
Parthiv Patel hit back at Rajdeep Sardesai for crediting Mumbai Ranji team for Indian cricket’s success.
Former India and Gujarat batter-keeper Parthiv Patel slammed journalist Rajdeep Sardesai after the journo credited Mumbai team’s success in domestic cricket for building the Indian team as well.
Mumbai won their 42nd Ranji Trophy title on March 14, 2024, as they defeated Vidarbha at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Needing 538 runs to win the final, Vidarbha resumed on the final day at 248/5. Akshay Wadkar fell for 102, while Harsh Dubey made 65 runs, with the duo adding 130 runs for the 6th wicket.
Despite the valiant efforts of Vidarbha’s captain, Akshay Wadkar, who struck a century, and youngster Harsh Dubey, who had bewildered Mumbai’s bowlers in a wicketless morning session with a 130-run sixth-wicket partnership. Vidarbha needed 290 runs on the final day of their 538-run chase.
Wadkar was the first wicket to go on day five, being trapped in front of the wicket by Kotian. Wadkar’s 102-run knock kept Vidarbha in the game, but after he was gone, it was all Mumbai’s.
However, Mumbai comfortably picked off the rest of Vidarbha’s wickets, as they were dismissed for 368 runs and lost by 169 runs.
This led to Rajdeep Sardesai, son of former India and Mumbai batter Dilip Sardesai sending a congratulatory post on X. He said that when Mumbai cricket is strong, Indian cricket is in good hands.
“Breaking: and Mumbai have won the Ranji Trophy for a remarkable 42nd time without Rohit, Sarfaraz or Jaiswal. Well done to @ajinkyarahane88 and the team. Remember when Mumbai cricket is strong, Indian cricket is in good hands. Just as an aside: my late father played 13 seasons for Mumbai, was never on a losing side, some kind of a world record I guess ! Jai ho Mumbai!” Rajdeep posted.
The Indian team can’t be built on just one state’s success: Parthiv Patel slams Rajdeep Sardesai
However, Rajdeep Sardesai’s words didn’t sit well with former India keeper-batter Parthiv Patel. Patel, who played for Gujarat, had won the state their first Ranji Trophy title in 2017. He had a storied career in both Gujarat and India.
He pointed out to Rajdeep that the Indian team is not built on the success of just the Mumbai team. Instead, he said that India is strongest when the Ranji Trophy is at its strongest.
“The Indian team can’t be built on just one state’s success. Great season for Mumbai, of course. A big congrats to the squad. But Indian cricket is strongest when we have a strong, competitive Ranji.and in the 8 years since the last time mumbai won,the successes of gujarat, vidarbha, saurashtra and MP have also played a huge role in indian cricket being strong,” Parthiv Patel posted.
