Indian and Jammu and Kashmir cricketer Parvez Rasool on Monday (20th October) announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. The all-rounder made the decision public through a Facebook post, making his fans aware of his decision.
Parvez Rasool, who was the first cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir to play for India, said that it was an emotional decision for him but it was an incredible journey for him. He also thanked his family, coaches, teammates, and fans for their love, trust, and constant support. He said:
“Alhamdu lillah for everything. Today, with mixed emotions, I announce my retirement from professional cricket. It’s been an incredible journey one filled with dreams, hard work, joy, and countless memories that I will cherish forever. From local grounds to representing my team and my country, in cricket, Allah has given me everything I ever wished for.
“Thankful to my family, coaches, teammates, and fans for their love, trust, and constant support throughout this journey. Every moment I’ve spent on the field has been an honour and a blessing.. My heartfelt gratitude also goes to the Jammu & Kashmir Sports Council and the Government of Jammu & Kashmir for their support, guidance, and encouragement over the years.”
I will continue to stay close to the game playing for passion, guiding youngsters – Parvez Rasool
Parvez Rasool added that although he is stepping away from the game, he continue to guide youngsters and will support them. He added:
“Though I’m stepping away from professional cricket, I will continue to stay close to the game playing for passion, guiding youngsters, and giving back to the sport that shaped my life. Thank you everyone for the love, the faith, and the unforgettable memories.”
Parvez Rasool received his maiden call-up for India during the ODI series in 2013 against Zimbabwe. But, he didn’t get the chance to make his debut. He had to wait for a year to make his ODI debut, which was against Bangladesh in June 2014.
However, he didn’t get to add more ODI caps. It took him three more years to play for India again, when he made his T20I debut against England in Kanpur in January 2017, where he became part of a major controversy.
He was spotted chewing gum during the national anthem and it was reportedly the reason behind his snub from the Indian side. He represented Men in Blue in one ODI and one T20I. He also played 11 games in the Indian Premier League (IPL), claiming four wickets.
