Pat Cummins became fifth Australian captain to clinch a World Cup title.

Australia secured their sixth World Cup title on November 19, celebrating a triumphant victory over India in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 finals held in Ahmedabad. Despite India’s unbeaten streak in the tournament, the pressure of the grand occasion proved too much as Travis Head’s brilliant century guided Australia to chase down a target of 241 with six wickets remaining.

However, the post-victory euphoria took an unexpected turn when an Australian media outlet published a derogatory and offensive comment about team India, titled ‘South Australian Man Gives Birth To World Record 11 Sons.’ This remark stirred controversy and sparked outrage among cricket fans, especially Indian fans, who expressed their displeasure on social media.

The controversial post gained further attention when it was revealed that Australian cricketers Glenn Maxwell and Aaron Finch had liked the post. More notably, Australia’s captain, Pat Cummins, initially added laughing emojis to the comment, indicating a seemingly light-hearted response. However, as the post garnered widespread condemnation and scrutiny, Cummins reportedly unliked the comment, signalling a realisation of the inappropriateness of the content.

The role of social media in amplifying such controversies and the subsequent impact on the image of the players and the team is also being widely debated.

Australian skipper’s initial engagement with the derogatory post and subsequent withdrawal have added fuel to the controversy, raising questions about the mindset and values within Australian cricket team.
