Pat Cummins will lead Australia for the first time in a home test series against India.

Australia test captain Pat Cummins feels that with India being “under pressure” after losing their first home test series to New Zealand, this is a great opportunity for his side to play against the Asian giants.

Ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Cummins, who will captain against India for the first time in a home test series, has expressed confidence about his side’s chances to thump India after losing the last four test series, including twice at home.

India recently went 0-2 down to New Zealand, which ended their 18-series winning streak at home that spanned 12 years. This is a major jolt to the Rohit Sharma-led team who will next tour Australia for a five-match test series, starting on November 22 in Perth.

Pat Cummins launched his book ‘Tested’ in Sydney on Tuesday. At the event, he was asked about whether his side would have an advantage heading into the test series after India’s shock defeat to the Kiwis at home.

The Australian skipper replied, “I hope so. I think any time a team’s under pressure, it’s not a bad thing if you’re playing against them.”

However, Cummins also noted, “But they’ve been out here before and performed well. Our job is to try and keep them quiet, see how we go.”

It’s the one big thing that I want to tick off: Pat Cummins

Cummins is one of Australia’s greatest-ever pacers and one of their most successful test captains. Under Cummins, Australia have a win percentage of 60.71. He has been part of several test series wins since his return to the side in 2017 but is yet to taste a series victory over India. The speedster remains eager to get that bugbear out of his way.

“It’s kind of the one big thing that I want to tick off. Particularly winning at home. Most Australians, me included, expect us to do well whenever we play at home,” Cummins said.

“We’ve lost the (last) two series against them (in Australia), so this is a big one. We feel like our team’s in a really good place, so we’ve got no reason why we shouldn’t perform really well.”

“I just always expect us to do well against whoever we play. But India, particularly, is a big year, big season.”

Under Cummins, Australia defeated India in the ICC World Test Championship 2023 final.
