Apart from him, there have been many great all-rounders in the past and even in the current era who have proven themselves time and time again.

This article will feature a few of those with a statistical view. There have been only a few all-rounders who have achieved the rare double of 4000 runs and 300 wickets in test cricket, and those who have achieved this rare feat will feature in this elite list.

1. Sir Ian Botham

Sir Ian Botham was one of the best all-rounders that the game has witnessed. His test career was and still is a dream for many cricketers who take up this sport. A career spanning over 15 years (1977-1992) had incredible success.

He was the first all-rounder to have 5000 runs and 350 wickets in test cricket. Botham retired after playing 102 tests, scoring 5200 runs at an average of 33.54 with 14 centuries and a best of 208. With the ball, he took 383 wickets at an average of 28.40 and 27 five-wicket hauls. He was also the highest wicket-taker between 1986 and 1988.

2. Kapil Dev

Famously known as the “Haryana Hurricane,” Kapil Dev is regarded as the greatest all-rounder that represented India. His achievements as a player and captain are still written in golden words in the Indian cricket history. But, it was his consistent performance with bat and ball in test cricket that made him one of the best ever.

He was the first and still the only player with a double of 5000 runs and 400 wickets in test cricket. Kapil retired with 131 tests between 1978 and 1994, scoring 5248 runs at 31.05, with eight centuries and 434 wickets with 23 five-wicket hauls.

3. Daniel Vettori

After Sir Richard Hadlee, former captain Daniel Vettori was the best all-rounder that New Zealand produced in this sport. A left-arm spinner, who was a consistent scorer down the order. He was only the eighth all-rounder with 3000 runs and 300 wickets in test cricket.

Overall, he finished with over 7000 runs and 700 wickets in international cricket. In tests, he played 113 games between 1997 and 2014 and took 362 wickets with 20 five-wicket hauls. He also scored 4531 runs at an average of 30, with six centuries.

4. Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja became fourth all-rounder to achieve the rare double of 4000 runs and 300 test wickets in November 2025. Having already completed 300 test wickets in 2024, Jadeja completed 4000 test runs in 2025 to join the elite list.

Since his test debut for India in 2012, he has been an absolute match winner with both ball and the bat. While at the start of his career he mostly was destructive with the ball, he shifted focus on his batting in second half of his career.

So far, Jadeja has played 88 tests for India, scoring 4001* runs and taking 338 wickets.
