The first day of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 ended with three nail-biting encounters.

It was the perfect start to the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Three matches were played on the first day of the tournament, producing nail-biting finishes. The day began with the game between Pakistan and the Netherlands in Colombo. The Netherlands put Pakistan in an uncomfortable position at one stage.

But it was a brilliant cameo by Faheem Ashraf (29* off 11) that sealed the deal for Pakistan. He was dropped at 7 by Max O’Dowd at long-off, which became the turning point. But a lot of praise should be given to the Dutch, who made the game out of it.

In the second game, West Indies thumped Scotland by 35 runs. Shimron Hetmyer showcased his six-hitting ability and hit six sixes in his knock of 64 off 36 balls. West Indies finished with 182/5, which looked chasable at one stage.

Scotland were 115/3 in 13.1 overs, but they lost their next seven wickets for just 32 runs. Romario Shepherd made history by registering a hat trick. He finished with 5/20 in three overs and helped the West Indies win the game.

India entered the tournament with several scores of over 200 in the recent series. But the wicket in Mumbai was two-paced, and the Indian batters failed to adjust. They were 77/6 in 12.4 when captain Suryakumar Yadav kept one end tight and unleashed himself.

He finished with an unbeaten 84 off 49 and took India to 161/9, which proved to be a winning total. The USA never looked in chase. They were 13/3 in 3.2 overs, and despite three batters scoring in the thirties, they only managed 132/8 and lost the game by 29 runs.
