Virat Kohli has managed to score only 1186 runs in 20 tests in last three years.
The highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 is set to start on November 22 in Perth. The upcoming series will mark the first instance since 1992 when India and Australia face each other in a five-match test series.
India will head into the series on the back of a shambolic home test series loss to New Zealand. The recently-concluded horror home series has brought scrutiny to many Indian players including star batsman Virat Kohli who scored just 93 runs across six innings with a poor average of 15.5.
Despite averaging 50 in tests until 2019, the Indian legend has faced a sharp decline in recent years recording his lowest average since his debut in 2011.
As we edge closer to all important Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Australia’s most successful captain Ricky Ponting has shared his thoughts on Virat Kohli.
Ponting backs Kohli to score big in Border-Gavaskar Trophy
Speaking on ICC Review, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting highlighted Kohli’s lean run with just two test centuries in the past five years. Acknowledging that Kohli’s current numbers are far from what’s expected of a world-class batter Ponting said, “I saw a stat the other day about Virat, it said he has only scored two Test hundreds in the last five years. That did not seem right to me, but if that is right, then that is, I mean, that is a concern,”
However, Ponting’s faith in Kohli’s ability remains undeterred. “I have said it before about Virat, you do not ever question the greats of the game. There is no doubt, he is a great of the game,” Ponting concluded, emphasizing Kohli’s resilience and knack for delivering in high-stakes situations.
Kohli has an extraordinary record against Australia in test cricket. The Indian superstar has scored over 2,000 test runs against them at a solid average of 47.48, with eight centuries to his name.
