Joe Root scored 150 runs in first innings of the Manchester test.
Former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting reacted to Joe Root surpassing him to become the second leading run-getter in test cricket. He also backed him to go past Sachin Tendulkar, who is leading the charts in the longest format of the game.
Joe Root has been batting like a dream in test cricket since the last few years. The premier England batter has hardly put a foot wrong and has slammed truckloads of runs. He has been one of the main reasons behind the turnaround of the Three Lions in the longest format of the game.
In the ongoing series against India, Root yet again has shown ominous form and is one of the major reasons why the Three Lions are bossing the fourth test of the five-match series, underway at the Old Trafford Stadium in Manchester.
Root, who slammed a century in the Lord’s test, made sure that he followed it up with another ton. The premier batter during his innings also shattered multiple records and etched his name in the record books.
Root first went past Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid to become the third-highest run-getter in the format. However, his hunger didn’t stop there as he then went past Ricky Ponting’s tally of 13378 to go second on the top of the leading run-getters charts in the tests.
Congratulations, Joe Root. Second on the table – Ricky Ponting

As Root went past Ricky Ponting, the former Australian cricketer was there to witness it. He was doing the commentary in the ongoing game and lauded the England batter for his heroics. Speaking on air, he said:
“Congratulations, Joe Root. Second on the table. 120 not-out. A knowledgeable crowd here at Old Trafford. All stand as one. They witness a moment in history. Just one more to go now. Just about 2500 behind, but the way his career is going for the last 4-5 years, no reason why not.”
With the kind of run Root is having, it won’t be a surprise if he ends up breaking Tendulkar’s record. The batting great, who played 200 tests in his career, finished with a remarkable tally of 15921 runs and 51 centuries.
