Prithvi Shaw is set to return to Mumbai Ranji Trophy 2024 squad.
In a big boost for Mumbai, opener Prithvi Shaw has recovered from his knee injury and will join the team for their next match against Bengal on 2nd February, 2024. Shaw had been out of action since September last year due to a knee injury he sustained during his stint in English county cricket.
Shaw had done extremely well for Northamptonshire last summer. He had scored a double century in the One-Day Cup for the club and was in a very good knick. He had first scored a record 244 against Somerset and then followed up by a 125* knock. However, the right-handed opener suffered a serious knee injury while fielding in a match against Durham and it was revealed that he had a damaged PCL.
He had to miss crucial Indian domestic tournaments like the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as well as the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He was, however, retained by his IPL franchise Delhi Capitals (DC) for the IPL 2024, despite having scored just 106 runs in eight matches in IPL 2023.
The 24-year-old shared a video sometime back of himself back in the nets and seemed to have put on a lot of weight during his time out of the game.
Prithvi Shaw to make his competitive cricket comeback in Ranji Trophy
However, the decision to bring him back for the Ranji Trophy comes after he received clearance from the National Cricket Academy (NCA), which declared him fit for competitive cricket. This meant that Shaw had been added to the squad led by Ajinkya Rahane and will face Bengal at the Eden Gardens starting on February 2.
The NCA had informed the MCA, stating, “Prithvi Shaw is progressing well in his batting and fielding drills. He will undergo higher volumes of acceleration, change of direction, and agility drills over the next 3 weeks to develop the required robustness for his injured knee ligament before making a return to sports.”
NCA granted him clearance to participate in the Ranji Trophy game on Wednesday. Mumbai currently leads the Group B Ranji points table with 20 points from four games, boasting three wins and one loss.
Mumbai squad: Ajinkya Rahane (captain), Shivam Dube, Prithvi Shaw, Jay Bista, Bhupen Lalwani, Amogh Bhatkal. Suved Parkar, Prasad Pawar (WK), Hardik Tamore (WK), Suryansh Shedge, Tanush Kotian, Atharva Ankolekar, Aditya Dhumal, Mohit Awasthi, Dhaval Kulkarni, Royston Dias and Sylvester Dsouza.
