Prithvi Shaw was with Delhi Capitals from IPL 2018 to 2024.
One of the shockers of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction was Prithvi Shaw going unsold. The 25-year-old who has played 12 international matches for India had set his base price of INR 75 lakhs and yet found no takers in the auction room.
Shaw’s IPL career began in IPL 2018 right after he led the India U19 team to the U19 World Cup title. He was part of the Delhi Capitals (DC) team from IPL 2018 to 2024 and was even one of their retentions ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction.
However, due to various reasons – loss in form, regular injuries, fitness struggles, off-field quarrels, and disciplinary issues – the career of Shaw, who was once compared to Sachin Tendulkar, has gone downhill with the IPL franchises not putting any faith in the right-handed opener.
It’s actually quite sad: Ricky Ponting
One of the people Shaw worked together extensively with is Ricky Ponting, who was very “sad” to see Shaw go unsold.
Throughout his IPL career, Shaw played under Ponting at DC. Now, Ponting has moved to Punjab Kings.
Speaking after the auction on Shaw, Ricky Ponting alluded at the famous saying of how the “game catches up with you” if you don’t respect it.
Ponting said, “Sad. You know, Prithvi, I still say now he is as talented a player as I probably ever worked with. He goes unsold in the auction and then doesn’t even come back in the accelerator. And there are a lot of teams here that are looking at him. He’s not playing. But as I said, the game catches up with you. So, yeah, I guess that. Yeah, that’s about all you can say.”
“When you look at something like that, it’s actually quite sad that he’s not,” the Australian remarked.
Since 2020, Prithvi Shaw has had a spate of injuries. While injuries are part of the game, he’s regularly gotten himself in off-field controversies, including getting suspended for using a banned substance, being alleged misconduct in the dressing room, altercation with social media influencers, and most recently being left out of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy team for poor fitness, “general conduct” and for appearing a “little overweight.”
All of this has resulted in a terrible loss of form for the opener, who was left out of Delhi’s playing XI last season and has an average of less than 30 in the last three seasons.
