Rahul Dravid explains his experimental approach in West Indies tour
Coach Rahul Dravid informed that KL Rahul will be missing out on India’s league games.
Indian head coach Rahul Dravid drew flak from Indian cricket team fans during the recently concluded West Indies tour. At first, Indian fans were disappointed about losing the World Test Championship, and then, in the ODI series against West Indies, Rahul Dravid began experimenting with the Indian playing XI. In the first ODI, captain Rohit Sharma and number 3 Virat Kohli didn’t get a chance to bat, and then in the second ODI, team India suffered an upset when Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were dropped from the playing XI. This created a huge outrage among Indian fans. Now once again, Dravid has come out and defended his stance.
‘It was all pre thought-through process’ says Rahul Dravid
Dravid said that the management was clear about the choices they had for the upcoming big events like Asia Cup or World Cup, and it was a thought-through process. He said, “This word experimentation keeps getting thrown around a lot without actually being thought through. We are not experimenting for the sake of experimenting. Sometimes there are specific reasons why you have to experiment.” Dravid had already defended his strategy of trying out players to explore more options before Asia Cup and World Cup to prepare for the worst-case scenario as Bumrah, Iyer, Rahul, and Pant all got injured at the same time.
Rahul was clear about his choices
Further explaining his decisions, Dravid said in the press conference, “People talk a lot about experimentation, but even before 18–20 months, I could have told who were the candidates for the numbers 4 and 5—it was always between KL, Pant, and Iyer, but unfortunately all got injured together.” Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul will be making their comebacks in Asia Cup, but KL Rahul is yet to get full fitness after carrying a niggle at the National Cricket Academy. Jasprit Bumrah was also unsure, but he made his comeback on the Ireland tour and is now fully recovered to take on the big names in world cricket.
Indian team will be traveling to Sri Lanka tonight to play in Asia Cup 2023. Rahul Dravid held a press conference in Alur before Indian team got ready for their departure to Colombo. They will be opening their campaign against Pakistan at Pallekele Stadium in Kandy. KL Rahul is still unfit, and Rahul Dravid informed the media that Rahul will be missing out on the league games against Pakistan and Nepal. Indian team for the World Cup is scheduled to be picked on September 5th, and India’s second league match against Nepal will be played on September 4th in Kandy as well. India are the defending champions of the 50-overs Asia Cup.
