Ravi Ashwin retired from international cricket on December 18.

Ravi Ashwin made a shocking decision to retire midway through the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. He announced his decision after the conclusion of the third test of the series at the Gabba in Brisbane.

The veteran Indian off-spinner ended his career with 765 international wickets, comprising 537 in tests, 156 in ODIs, and 72 in T20Is. In addition to his remarkable bowling stats, the 38-year-old all-rounder also scored 3,503 runs in test cricket at an average of 25.75, including six centuries and 14 half-centuries.

Post Ashwin’s retirement announcement, fans took to social media to share emotional tributes, with many, including India’s World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev, suggesting that the legendary off-spinner deserved a farewell match before calling time on his career.

In response to the suggestion that he deserved a ceremonious exit, Ravi Ashwin made it clear that he does not believe in grand farewells.

During a conversation on a YouTube show with television presenter Gobinath, Ravi Ashwin said. “As far as I am concerned, grand farewells are wrong. I don’t think you should give grand farewell ceremonies to anyone. Especially, I firmly believe that you shouldn’t give me a grand farewell. I don’t want anyone shedding a drop of tear for me. I think grand send-offs are part of a super celebrity culture.

He went on to express his views on how people should remember an individual’s contributions to the game.

He continued, “I understand we run behind someone for the love we have for them. But I feel that people should get inspired by one’s achievements, the legacy that one leaves behind, the way one left the game, and the way one has spoken about the game. But farewells are wrong, I think. If there is a match that has been organised just to celebrate me, I think it’s a disservice to the game.

Meanwhile, India have added Tanush Kotian to the squad as Ashwin’s replacement.
