Rohit Sharma talked about Ravi Ashwin's possible inclusion for the ICC Cricket World Cup.
Team India continued their dominance on Sunday as they registered a resounding win over Sri Lanka in the final of the Asia Cup 2023. After losing the toss, India were asked to bowl first, and it came as a brilliant decision for them. Mohammed Siraj was on fire as he completed the joint-fastest fifer in ODI history in the first 16 balls.
Siraj also dismissed four Sri Lankan batters in an over, which is also a record for an Indian bowler. He ended up with his career-best figure of 6/21. Hardik Pandya also took 3/3, and Sri Lanka were bowled out for just 50 runs in 15.2 overs. All ten wickets were taken by pacers, and the Indian team didn't require a spinner to bowl, apart from one over from Kuldeep Yadav.
Rohit Sharma hints at Ravi Ashwin's inclusion in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
Chasing the score, Shubman Gill (27 off 19) and Ishan Kishan (23 off 18) added 51 runs in just 6.1 overs to take India home by ten wickets with 263 balls to spare. It was India's biggest win in terms of balls left in an ODI game. With this, India won 8th Asia Cup title (7th in ODI Asia Cup). After the win, Indian captain Rohit Sharma attended the press conference and shed light on Axar Patel's injury.
Notably, Axar was ruled out of the final game, and Washington Sundar replaced him in the playing XI. Furthermore, Rohit Sharma also hinted at Ravi Ashwin's possible inclusion in the upcoming World Cup squad.
The Indian captain said, "With the spinning all-rounder, everyone's in line, [R] Ashwin as well. I've been talking to him on the phone. He's very much in line, so is Washy. We want those guys who can do the job with ball and bat as well. The injury happened to Axar at the last minute. Washington was available, so he had to come and perform the role for us."
Rohit also confirmed that Axar needs another 10 days to get 100 percent fit and will not play the first two ODIs against Australia. The Indian captain said, "Axar - I'm not sure, he had a small tear. It looks like maybe [unavailable] a week or ten days. We just have to wait and see how the injury progresses. Because every individual is different; some guys recover quickly. I hope that's the case with Axar, so we'll wait and see what happens with him. Obviously, am not too sure if he'll be available to play the first two games at home against Australia. We'll wait and see."
That means that India might search for other spin options. Ravi Ashwin has a great track record in India, and he might get a chance in the squad.
