Veteran India off-spinner Ravi Ashwin stunned the cricketing world on 18th December, 2024, Wednesday by announcing his retirement from all forms of international cricket.

Following the conclusion of the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 test in Brisbane, Ashwin announced that he’s decided to quit international cricket with immediate effect.

Speaking the press conference while sitting beside captain Rohit Sharma, Ashwin said, “I don’t want to make this about myself. This is my last day as international cricketer. I have created a lot of memories. We are the last bunch of OGs in the dressing room.”

Will Ravi Ashwin play in IPL 2025?

Yes, Ashwin will play in the IPL 2025 as he has retired just from international cricket. He could also feature in domestic cricket for Tamil Nadu.

At the IPL 2025 mega auction, Ashwin was bought by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for INR 9.75 crores. In the upcoming IPL season, Ashwin will reunite with CSK, MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, etc.

Ashwin was with CSK from IPL 2008 to 2015 and played a key role in the franchise’s title-winning campaigns in the 2010 and 2011. He then played for Rising Pune Supergiants, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, and Delhi Capitals before returning to the five-time champions.

Meanwhile, Ashwin leaves as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in international cricket and test cricket, behind only Anil Kumble in both lists. He claimed 537 wickets at an average of 24 in 106 test matches with 37 five-wicket hauls, which is the joint-second most along with Shane Warne. He is the fastest bowler to 250, 300 and 350 test wickets. Overall, he finished with 765 wickets for India.

Along with his spin mastery, Ashwin contributed considerably with the bat. He scored 3503 test runs with six hundreds and 14 fifties. He also won a 11 Player-of-the-Series awards in his test career, the joint-most with Muttiah Muralitharan.
