Ravi Ashwin retired from international cricket on 18 December 2024.

Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravi Ashwin officially announced his retirement from international cricket on December 18, 2024.

The 38-year-old all-rounder announced his decision during the post-match press conference alongside skipper Rohit Sharma following the completion of the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) test in Brisbane.

Ashwin finished his international career as India‘s second-highest wicket-taker in test cricket, with an impressive tally of 537 wickets. He also has the seventh-most test wickets in history.

Ashwin’s shocking announcement left fans in disbelief, triggering a series of emotional tributes across social media. Two days after the announcement, Ashwin’s wife, Prithi, penned a heartfelt letter on Instagram, showcasing her love for her husband and his passion towards the game.

Prithi began her letter by remembering the early days of their journey.

She wrote, “Dear Ashwin, from not knowing how to put a kit bag together to following you to stadiums all over the world, rooting for you, watching you and learning from you, it has been an absolute pleasure. The world you introduced me to gave me the privilege to watch and enjoy a sport that I love from close quarters.

She shed light on how passionately the Indian off-spinner played the sport. She underlined the importance of Ashwin continuously refining his skills, even after being one of the best in the world at his craft.

She continued, “It also showed me how much passion, hard work and discipline is needed to keep your head above water. And sometimes even that is not enough I remember us talking about why you, R Ashwin, had to do all of this and a lot more to even stay relevant in the scheme of things. How awards, the best of stats, the POMs, the accolades, the records didn’t matter if you didn’t sharpen your skill sets constantly.

Concluding her letter on a personal note, Prithi encouraged Ashwin to embrace the next chapter of his life.

She concluded, “Live life on your terms, make space for those extra calories, make time for your family, make time to do absolutely nothing, share memes all day, create a new bowling variation, bug our kids out of their minds. Just do it all.
