Tilak Varma scored 173 runs in five-T20I games against West Indies in his debut series.

Tilak Varma has become a hot topic in Indian cricket recently. He made his T20I debut against West Indies and impressed everyone with his extraordinary work with the bat. After his wonderful start in international cricket, Tilak Varma has become a contender for a place in the upcoming big events. As Shreyas Iyer is still in rehabilitation and selectors are unsure about his comeback into the Indian batting lineup at No. 4, talks have begun among former cricketers and fans to allow Tilak Varma to fill the gap in the Indian middle order. Former Indian coach Ravi Shastri has suggested to bring in Tilak Varma in the Indian squad.

Ravi Shastri on Tilak Varma

Former Indian coach Ravi Shastri said, “There are three other positions where I think two left-handers have to come in, apart from the top 4 you mentioned. Now this is where the selector’s role comes in because they are watching. They know who’s the guy who’s hot. If Tilak Varma is hot, bring him in. If you think Yashasvi Jaiswal is hot, bring him in.” Both Tilak and Yashasvi made their international debuts on the recently concluded West Indies tour. Jaiswal played 2 Tests and 3 T20Is as an opener, while Tilak featured in 5 T20I games for India, batting at the number 4 position.

Ravi Shastri, while talking about India’s selection dilemma for the upcoming Asia Cup and World Cup 2023 in the case of Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul. He also suggested that Ishan Kishan has been keeping the wickets for India, so selectors shouldn’t go anywhere else. Ravi said, “If you have persisted with Ishan Kishan for the last 6–8 months and he’s going to keep wickets, he comes in, in any case. But if you get two left-handers, including Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja), there should be three left-handers in the top seven. Ishan Kishan has kept it for the last 15 months. Why go somewhere else?”

Along with a strong middle order, in case KL Rahul doesn’t get fit, India will also need a wicketkeeper option as Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul will both be away in rehabilitation. The selectors are waiting for the final fitness reports of both Shreyas and Rahul to decide on the future course of action. There are just two weeks left for the Asia Cup to start, and India have not picked their squad for the tournament. India will be playing their opening Asia Cup game against Pakistan at Pallekele Stadium in Kandy on September 2.
