Ravi Shastri’s comments came after India’s horrible outing with bat in Guwahati.

Ravi Shastri was left aghast at the poor showing by the Indian batters in their first innings of the ongoing second test against South Africa. This match is being played at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.

South Africa won the toss and chose to bat first. Thanks to a century by Senuran Muthuswamy and 93 by Marco Jansen, South Africa posted 489 runs in their first innings. This was despite South Africa being 246/6 at one stage.

In return, with openers KL Rahul (22) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (58) scoring 65 runs for the first wicket, India performed admirably. However, the Indian team quickly failed and went from 95/1 to 122/7. In short order, Sai Sudharsan (15), Dhruv Jurel (0), Rishabh Pant (7), and Ravindra Jadeja (6) all perished.

At one point, this put India at 122/7. However, Washington Sundar (48) and Kuldeep Yadav (19*) stopped the wickets from falling, and on day three, adding 72 runs together.

Reacting to the poor batting by India, former South Africa captain Shaun Pollock stated that Indian batting was ‘soft’ on commentary. He further stated that it would have been understandable if the wickets had come “off some brilliant deliveries.”

“Very soft dismissals,” Pollock said on JioHotstar, triggering Shastri to make his point about ordinary batting.

Ravi Shastri agreed with Pollock and shared his thoughts on India’s batting display.

This is still a good surface. This is not a pitch to be 142 for 7. Ordinary batting. India won’t be one bit happy. You have to put your hands up and say that’s very ordinary batting,” Ravi Shastri, former India coach, stated on commentary.

Former India opener Abhinav Mukund also shared his views and said, “Definite question marks about Indian batsmen. India doesn’t play a Test series next year at home. They have a long time to reassess what to do at the Test match level. This performance against South Africa will definitely hurt.”
