Pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah made his test debut in 2018 under coach Ravi Shastri.

The last 5-6 years have been brilliant for India in test cricket. Indian pace bowlers have stunned the world with their lethal accuracy and pace in the longest format of the game. Indian bowling lineup under Jasprit Bumrah has shown big improvement and challenged opponents in every condition they took on. Bumrah recently became the number one bowler in test cricket.

Jasprit Bumrah earned the pole position after picking up two six-wicket hauls in the last three test matches. Bumrah became the first ever Indian pace bowler to be awarded the number one rank in the ICC Test Bowlers’ Rankings. Bumrah played only ODIs and T20I games for two years when he made his debut for India in 2016. It was former Indian coach Ravi Shastri who ‘unleashed’ Bumrah in test cricket.

Shastri recalls his chat with Bumrah

Ace Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah was dubbed as a white-ball specialist pacer in his early days. It was Ravi Shastri, who trusted Bumrah in test cricket and awarded him his first test cap in 2018. Shastri revealed in a chat with former England captain Mike Atherton. Former English skipper Mike Atherton shared an exclusive chat with Shastri in The Times news portal.

Ravi Shastri recalled his chat with Jasprit Bumrah about test cricket. Shastri said, “I remember my first call to him, it was in Kolkata. I asked him would he be interested in Test cricket. He said that would be the biggest day of his life. He was labelled as a white-ball cricketer without asking him. But I knew. I wanted to see how hungry he was.”

Ravi Shastri also recalled that he informed Bumrah about his first test opportunity and unleashed him in test cricket. Shastri said, “I told him to get ready, be prepared. I told him I was going to unleash him in South Africa.” Bumrah made his test debut against South Africa in 2018. He made a grand entry and picked up three wickets in the second innings of his debut test.
