Ravindra Jadeja breaks Kapil Dev's 29-year-old ODI record against West Indies

Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has taken 44 scalps against West Indies in ODIs.

India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja ran through the West Indies side and went past legend Kapil Dev’s almost three-decade-old record in the process, in the first of three ODI matches which is being played at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados on July 27, 2023.

After winning the Test series 1-0, Rohit Sharma and co. wanted to do well in the ODIs as well given that it is a World Cup year and the ICC event will begin in October in India. He started off well by winning the toss and choosing to bat.

Mukesh Kumar made his India debut in ODIs, while Ishan Kishan was picked over Sanju Samson as the keeper.

Hardik Pandya opened the bowling and removed Kyle Mayers for 2 runs. Then a small partnership developed between Alick Athanaze (22) and Brandon King (17), but they fell in succession to Mukesh Kumar and Shardul Thakur.

It was West Indies captain Shai Hope who shined with a knock of 45 and looked like stabilizing the innings with Shimron Hetmyer (11), but then Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav ran through the Windies innings quickly.

Jadeja picked 3/37 in 6 overs, while Kuldeep Yadav took 4/6 in 3 overs as West Indies was bundled for just 114 runs in 23 overs.

Ravindra Jadeja goes past Kapil Dev’s record of most ODI wickets by an Indian bowler against West Indies  

India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja scripted history on Thursday as he went past the legendary Kapil Dev's record to become India's highest wicket-taker against West Indies in One Day Internationals (ODIs) during the series opener in Barbados.

Before the ODI series against West Indies, Jadeja was sharing the third spot with former India leg-spinner Anil Kumble with 41 wickets in 29 ODIs against the Caribbean. Kapil Dev had dismissed 43 West Indies batsmen.

Jadeja broke Kapil Dev's record when he dismissed Romario Shepherd in the 18th over to take his third wicket of the match.

Jadeja's career-best ODI figures of 5/36 also came against West Indies, showing his penchant for picking wickets against West indies.

Jadeja is also known for his batting skills and is close to equalling another record held by Kapil Dev - scoring 1,000 runs and taking 50 wickets in ODI cricket away from home. He has 1,125 ODI runs away from home, he requires three more wickets to join Kapil Dev on this list.
