On a dry wicket at Chepauk, Delhi Capitals have failed to chase down 168 runs against Chennai Super Kings. With this loss, they have closed their doors in the IPL 2023, and they are almost out of the race for the playoffs. Chennai, with a magnificent opening spell from Deepak Chahar (2/28) and a finishing spell from Matheesha Pathirana (3/37) held Delhi on 140 for 8.
Chennai with small contributions from the batting lineup scored 167 runs. The Spinners had a great game on this wicket. Ravindra Jadeja bowled an economical spell of (1/19) 4 overs, he was also awarded Player of the Match for his all-round effort. Jadeja scored 21 runs with the bat. Chennai Super Kings defeated Delhi Capitals by 27 runs.
'We threw our wickets away' says David Warner
Delhi had a poor start and lost 3 wickets in Power play. Chennai batters also struggled to score freely, only Shivam Dube could hit boundaries with ease. He smashed 25 runs in 12 balls and smashed 3 towering sixes. Talking about the batting, Delhi captain David Warner said, “Losing three wickets in the power play, this is for the fifth and sixth time we have lost a wicket in the first over. And it was only us throwing our wickets away. The run-out, the target was gettable and we just have to start well and have one of our batter bats long”. David Warner was out on the first over of the game.
CSK Captain impressed with the team's bowling effort
Chennai Super Kings had a brilliant bowling display in the game. Deepak Chahar’s spell in the power play made sure CSK had control over Delhi Capitals. In the middle, Ravindra Jadeja didn’t give Delhi batters any room to score. Matheesha Pathirana finished the game with 2 wickets in the last few overs. MS Dhoni was happy about the team's effort in bowling, he said, “Our spinners used the seam more than the pacers, I wanted the bowlers to bowl their best deliveries but not go looking for wickets”. The CSK captain further added, “We can still do better as a batting unit. There were a few shots you are better off avoiding on this wicket”.
Ravindra Jadeja won POTM award
Ravindra Jadeja was awarded Player of the Match for his all-round effort in the game. Jadeja conceded only 19 runs in his 4 overs and picked up a wicket. Jadeja also scored 21 runs with the bat and played a crucial part in the team's total of 167 runs.
Talking about his performance, Jadeja said, “As a spinner, it feels great, feels great when the ball is stopping and turning. We practice here, so we know what length and what pace we should bowl”. Ravindra Jadeja also talked about the crowd's love for MS Dhoni. He said, “When I bat at 7, the crowd is disappointed and chants for Mahi bhai, imagine if I bat higher, they will just wait for me to get out”. MS Dhoni came in to bat at number 8 and smashed 20 runs in 9 balls with a four and 2 sixes.
