Australia eliminated India out of Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 on Sunday.
The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 has entered its business end as group stage matches have now ended. India’s campaign ended in disappointment after the loss to Australia at Lord’s on Sunday. Australia defeated the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side by six wickets in a must-win game with complete dominance.
This was always going to be a high-pressure game. India needed a win to qualify for the playoffs, while Australia, who were already settled at the top spot, confirmed their spot in the knockouts. Harmanpreet Kaur led from the front with an excellent half-century while Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma gave India another solid start.
India posted 170 runs on the board, and they had something to defend against one of the strongest batting line-ups in women’s cricket. During the chase, Indian bowlers did quite well as Australia were 68/3 at one point, but the momentum slowly shifted towards Australia as Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner stitched a brilliant partnership.
Both batters played a wonderful knock and easily chased the target in 19 overs. Ellyse Perry scored 56 off 38 balls while Ashleigh Gardner played a fiery knock of 53 runs in 29 balls and led Australia into the Women’s T20 World Cup Semi-final.
Three big reasons behind India’s defeat to Australia
1. Slow batting after a strong start

India did not score much enough in the middle overs despite having a solid start by Smriti Mandhana and Shefali Verma, who added 66-run opening partnership. India’s scoring rate was not high enough for a must-win game against Australia.
India kept losing momentum after the opening stand; however, Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur played quite well, but it didn’t really help the team to accelerate their run rate until the final overs.
2. Middle overs pressure
Once the openers were out, India struggled to keep control of the innings in the middle phase. Smriti Mandhan’s run out was a big setback, and the loss of quick wickets forced India to slow down their game rather than attack.
Harmanpreet Kaur did well by stepping up at one end, but they could not keep the pressure on Australia for long enough. In between all of this, Jemimah Rodrigues retired, which acted as another setback, and instead of accelerating the inning, it eventually slowed the run rate.
3. Bowling and Fielding breakdown

India started the chase well with the ball, especially when Renuka Singh dismissed Georgia Voll early. But after that strong opening, Australia’s experienced pair of Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner took control. India’s bowler failed to break this partnership, and eventually, Australia bounced back in the game and dominated.
Fielding also played a part in India’s defeat against Australia. India had already been under pressure in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 with dropped chances and loose moments. These small errors against a team like Australia get even worse as they may lead you to lose the game, and that was exactly what happened in the must-win game.
Now, India’s Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign ended in disappointment, but the tournament also showed the areas that need improvement. Australia, on the other hand, once again proved why they are one of the best teams in world cricket.
India’s defeat against Australia, along with South Africa’s win over Bangladesh, led the Women in Blue to finish at third spot in the T20 World Cup Group A Points Table, and now, they are eliminated from the tournament.
Who guided Australia to victory against India?
