Shubman Gill has been best batter for India in Test Cricket since last one year.
Indian skipper Shubman Gill endured a very rough outing with the bat during the first Test against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium. The Indian captain returned with two low scores of 16 and 8, though India maintained their control over the match.
Gill arrived in Galle carrying the immense responsibility of scoring runs as the captain of the Indian team. A captain is expected to lead from the front, especially when the team has entered the final segment of matches en route to the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 final.
Though Gill has been a commendable strategic mind and a very handy fielder, his batting performance in first SL vs IND Test fell short of expectations. The cheap dismissals have clearly reflected the tactical vulnerabilities in his technique under the subcontinent conditions.
Reasons behind Shubman Gill’s struggle at the Galle

3. Shubman Gill’s lack of exposure to subcontinent conditions
One of the biggest challenges for the Indian skipper coming into the Sri Lanka series was to adapt to the conditions in the subcontinent. India have not played a single Test in Sri Lanka since Gill’s debut; hence, this was Indian skipper’s debut in Lankan conditions.
Just ahead of the series, Gill himself stressed the fact that a lack of preparation might lead to difficulties in adapting to different conditions. Unlike Padikkal, Gill played his last month of cricket in England under conditions totally different from those in the subcontinent. Also, an injury had kept Gill away from India’s warm-up game against Sri Lanka Cricket XI ahead of the first Test.
2. Galle demands patience over strokeplay
Shubman Gill is a batter with high technical prowess; however, he is more suited to modern-day Test match pitches which often offer favourable shot-making conditions. Gill is also known as a natural shot maker; however, unlike most pitches, Galle demands more of an orthodox approach to the game.
Players like KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal gained success due to their additional temperament. For Gill, the challenge posed was not simply shot-making but also leaving well, playing late and, most importantly, holding his shape against spinners.
1. Vulnerability against left-arm spinners
Across both innings of the Galle Test, it was noted that Shubman Gill was dismissed by Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya. First, he misjudged a turning delivery, and then he was deceived by an arm ball.
These clearly exposed Gill’s possible weakness against left-arm spinners. The conditions in Galle favour discipline against spin bowlers; however, Gill’s hesitation in reading Jayasuriya early and compromised footwork led to his dismissals.
When was the last time India played a Test in Sri Lanka?
India played their last Test match in Sri Lanka back in 2017. The 2026 Test series marks India’s return to the island nation after nine years.
What are Shubman Gill stats against Sri Lanka in Test cricket?
