List of records broken by India in Asia Cup 2023 final against Sri Lanka
India defeated Sri Lanka in the final by 10 wickets to win the Asia Cup 2023.
India concluded a brilliant Asia Cup 2023 campaign by defeating co-hosts Sri Lanka in a lopsided final at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on September 17, 2023. This was India’s 8th overall ODI Asia Cup title win, the most in the history of the continental tournament.
Sri Lanka started right away as captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and chose to bat first, keeping the new pitch and conditions in mind. But India received some timely help as the start was delayed due to rain, and it was enough for the Indian pacers to wreak havoc.
Mohammed Siraj picked up a career-best 6/21 in a brilliant display of swing bowling, which included a record four wickets in an over. He was aided by Hardik Pandya (3/3) and Jasprit Bumrah, who started it all with the wicket of Kusal Perera in the first over. Sri Lanka was bowled out for 50 runs.
India chased down the target in 6.1 overs to win by 10 wickets and become champions. In the course of this dominating win, the men in blue also registered some amazing records.
Here is the list of records broken by India in the Asia Cup 2023 final against Sri Lanka:
1 - India's biggest win in ODIs (By balls remaining) - 263 balls :
This was India’s biggest win in ODIs when it comes to balls left in the innings. Thanks to quick scores by Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill, India achieved the measly target of 51 runs to win the match and make India the Asia Cup champions.
India won with 263 balls in their innings, making it their biggest win in men's ODIs in terms of balls to spare and the biggest win by any team against Sri Lanka. It is also the sixth-biggest win for any team in terms of balls to spare in men's ODIs.
2 - Biggest win in the final match of an ODI tournament (By balls remaining) - 263 balls:
The 263 balls that remained in India’s innings when they achieved the target of 51 were also the biggest win in the final of a one-day series by the margin of balls remaining.
The previous best record was 226 balls when Australia decimated England in the first final of the VB series in a match that was played at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney. England could muster 117 runs batting first as Andy Bichel, with 4/18, ran through them. And in the chase, Adam Gilchrist hammered a 37-ball 63* and Matthew Hayden made 45* as Australia won by 10 wickets in 12.2 overs.
3 - Mohammed Siraj became the first Indian bowler to take 4 wickets in an over in an ODI :
Mohammed Siraj is the first Indian bowler to take four wickets in an over. He achieved this feat when he dismissed Pathum Nissanka, Charith Asalanka, Sadeera Samarawickrama, and Dhananjaya de Silva in the 4th over of the Sri Lankan innings. He then went on to pick up two more wickets to end with his career-best bowling figures of 6/21.
Overall, Siraj is only the fourth bowler in ODIs to take four wickets in an over. Only three other bowlers have picked up four wickets in an over in men's ODIs since 2002: Chaminda Vaas against Bangladesh in 2003, Mohammad Sami against New Zealand in 2003, and Adil Rashid against the West Indies in 2019.
4 - India dismissed Sri Lanka for 50 runs - Lowest total in an ODI final (Previous - India 54 vs Sri Lanka in Sharjah, 2000) :
India’s bowling out of Sri Lanka for just 50 runs was also the lowest total by any team in an ODI tournament final. India needed only 15.2 overs to wrap up the Sri Lankan innings, with Mohammed Siraj taking 6/21 and only two Lankan batters getting into double figures.
The previous lowest score in an ODI final was held by India, incidentally, against Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka had bowled out India for 54 runs in the final of the 2000 Coca-Cola Champions Trophy in Sharjah. Batting first, Sri Lanka had posted 299/5, with Sanath Jayasuriya making 189. In response, India crumbled to 54 in 26.3 overs as Chaminda Vaas took 5/14 and Muralitharan took 3/6.
5 - 7th ODI Asia Cup title – Most :
This was India’s eighth Asia Cup title win, including the one in 2016, when Asia Cup was played in T20I format. However, counting only 50-over Asia Cup editions, this was India’s seventh title win, the most. India had won the inaugural Asia Cup in 1984 as well.
Then India won the tournament in the ODI format in 1988, 1990-91, 1995, 2010, 2018 and 2023.
