Nathan Lyon achieved three unique records during the first test match vs New Zealand.
Australian spin wizard Nathan Lyon emerged as the hero of the first test against New Zealand in Wellington. The veteran off-spinner not only lead his side to a convincing 172-run victory but also etched his name in the history books with a couple of impressive records.
Lyon’s bowling prowess was on full display throughout the match. He started by dismantling the New Zealand batting lineup in the first innings, claiming four crucial wickets in a relatively economical spell. In the second innings, he took things a step further, bagging a six-wicket haul for just 65 runs, effectively shutting down any hopes of a Kiwi fightback. This phenomenal performance brought his match tally to a staggering 10 wickets, his fifth 10-wicket haul in test cricket.
Records Nathan Lyon achieved during NZ vs AUS first test match
1. First to score 1500 or more runs without registering a fifty or a hundred in test cricket

Australian right-handed batter Nathan Lyon made a huge impact with both bat and ball during the first test match against New Zealand. Stepping in as a nightwatchman in Australia’s second innings, Nathan Lyon surprised everyone with a gritty knock of 41 runs and helped the visitors reach 164 runs in the second innings.
With that 41 with the bat, Lyon crossed the 1500-run mark in test cricket, achieving the feat without ever scoring a single fifty or a hundred. This makes him the first cricketer in history to reach such a milestone purely on the basis of his contributions as a lower-order batter.
2. Equals most 5-wicket hauls by a bowler in different host countries in tests

After delivering the match-winning performance against New Zealand, where he picked up 6/65 in the second inning, Lyon’s bowling heroics also put him in elite company. The veteran off-spinner joined the legendary spin duo of Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan for the record of claiming the most five-wicket hauls (9) in different test playing countries.
3. First spin bowler to take 10-wicket haul in New Zealand since 2006

Nathan Lyon played a crucial role in Australia’s victory over New Zealand in the first test. Lyon claimed four wickets in the first innings. In the second innings, Lyon showed his class as he bagged a six-wicket haul for just 65 runs. His 10-wicket haul became the first such achievement by a spinner in New Zealand since legendary bowlers Muttiah Muralitharan and Daniel Vettori, who achieved it in 2006.
With this all-around performance in the first test against New Zealand, Nathan Lyon proved his invaluable worth to the Australian team. His bowling mastery and unexpected batting contribution were instrumental in securing a dominant win for the visitors. The records he created further solidify his place as one of the greatest spinners of the modern era.
